The moon features the "maternal" aspect of the Divine Being.
It is also meant as the premises of all forms, the storage basin of forms yet to come, as well as the repository of those that are no more.

Thus the square shapes correspond to this "natural" and substantial function. In Christian iconography, the Crucified's arms are represented as holding the sun on his right while the moon is kept to his left, as the two possible sides of his Sole Reality.
